AXA Hong Kong and Macau has expanded its healthcare service offerings across the Greater Bay Area (GBA), introducing updates to its Cancer Medical Concierge network and launching a new Endoscopy Medical Concierge service.

These enhancements target customers covered by select medical insurance plans and employee benefits policies, as the insurer responds to increased demand for cross-border medical coordination between Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Healthcare trends

The announcement reflects shifting healthcare expectations among Hong Kong residents, many of whom are seeking treatment flexibility across the region.

According to survey findings cited by AXA, over 70% of respondents see cross-border medical services as a way to access a wider range of care options, while nearly 60% view the trend as long-term. Cancer remains the leading health threat in the territory, with lung, breast, liver, and colorectal cancers most frequently reported.

The findings coincide with regional concerns over rising healthcare costs. A 2024 Manulife study involving 8,400 participants across eight Asian economies identified medical expenses as a top financial pressure point for 75% of respondents, surpassing even inflation-related worries. The same report noted that 39% of those surveyed prioritised physical health over financial or mental well-being, signalling increased demand for insurance products that address holistic health.

Expansion of healthcare services

To support the demand, AXA has broadened its partnerships with healthcare institutions in both Hong Kong and the Mainland, including Prosper Health, United Family Hospitals in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, and the Hong Kong Integrated Oncology Centre.

Cancer Medical Concierge

The expanded cancer care service will allow for greater flexibility in consultation location and treatment coordination.

The network now includes additional cancer types and benefits such as premium waivers and post-treatment recovery subsidies of up to HK$2,000 for qualified customers.

AXA said that a case manager with medical experience is assigned to guide policyholders through the process. Services include arranging specialist referrals, obtaining second opinions, and managing pre- and post-treatment follow-ups. A cashless settlement system has also been implemented to reduce the need for upfront payment at selected facilities.

Janet Lee (pictured left), chief life and health insurance officer at AXA Hong Kong and Macau, said the enhancements reflect the company’s ongoing efforts to provide accessible and coordinated medical services in the Greater Bay Area.

“AXA is committed to leading the market by providing diverse healthcare support and services,” she said. “Through continuous innovation and service enhancements, we will strengthen the healthcare ecosystem in the Greater Bay Area, offering more diversified choices.”

The addition of endoscopy support enables early cancer screening, particularly for high-risk groups, complementing our treatment-focused concierge services.

Endoscopy Medical Concierge

The newly introduced Endoscopy Medical Concierge service extends access to esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy procedures in regional medical centres.

AXA clients undergoing these procedures can access private rooms designed to accommodate family support and receive transportation and incentive vouchers valued between HK$1,000 and HK$2,000, depending on their plan eligibility.

Emily Li (pictured right), chief employee benefits and wellness officer, emphasised the broader scope of care these enhancements aim to deliver.

“We believe that these innovative services will help create a more effective ‘Healthcare and Wellness Ecosystem’ for our customers. Looking ahead, we will continue to expand medical options, enhance medical and healthcare cooperation between Hong Kong and Mainland China, and strengthen the seamless connection of cross-border medical protection,” she said.
